But in John Smith’s writing, she was older, hotter, and immensely attracted to him, risking her life to save his, quote: “she hazarded the beating of her own brains to save mine”. In real life, John Smith met Matoaka when she was around ten to twelve years old. This came to a nadir for Native women in 1616 when John Smith wrote about his fictionalized experiences with Matoaka, more commonly known as Pocahontas (who at this point in history was still alive). However, once Indigenous groups started to fight back against colonization, Indigenous women were subsequently labelled as “sq**s” (I am not typing out the full slur, you can figure out what it is) sexually promiscuous and deviant, and therefore perfectly acceptable to rape (and kill). Male colonizers were fascinated by these women unbound by sexually repressive gender roles back in Europe, and described them as alluring “Indian Princesses”. ![]() When Europeans first made contact on Turtle Island, they instantly set their sights on Indigenous women. So, why is dressing up as, say, a sexy Pocahontas not considered politically correct anymore?īecause those costumes are deeply rooted in a long racist and misogynistic history against Native women in America and Canada, with repercussions to this day. Even today, there’s still a lot of pushback against the idea that you shouldn’t dress up as a racist stereotype on Halloween. It seems though that the posters didn’t really do a good job explaining WHY said costumes weren’t okay, if the ensuing controversy (and mockeries) were any indication. ![]() You’re probably most familiar with the “ We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” poster series, in which a person of color holds up a picture of someone in a racist costume with the caption “This is NOT who I am, and this is NOT okay”. America will fulfill her promise of being as nearly perfect as a country can be.Halloween is right around the corner, and you’re probably seeing anti-racist costume PSAs pop up again. When all of us, no matter the shield we hide behind, step out into the light. We’ve rewarded them for using their skin color as a shield against the real world, a world that judges one on a million personal traits, but by far the most important is accomplishment. Unfortunately, we’ve allowed Blacks to hide behind their skin color far too long in America. ![]() Some of us let it define us, some of us brave stepping into the sunlight where our abilities can bloom. To risk clichés: old dogs, new tricks a leopard changing it’s spots? And worse for the future of America, her prophecy, the economic ruin.īut, alas, it’s politics, and as they have for a couple of centuries, those running for office will presume you’re so stupid you’ll hear promises of Valhalla and not look at the results of past performance. ![]() If you think you can avoid the needles and feces covering the sidewalks. Wander through the streets of what was once the jewel of America’s Pacific Coast, if you dare. And if that’s the criteria for what we can expect from Kamala Harris, all we need to do is not listen to what an accomplished politician says, but at the wreckage and garbage she’s left behind-California and San Francisco. You know there is no better example of “it ain’t what you say, it’s what you do,” than Donald J. No matter what Blacks would have you believe, America has already proven her all inclusiveness what more could you ask than a Black president for a full eight year term? The current life expectancy of an American male is 73.4 years. Her middle name literally means goddess in Hindi. Do any of us actually expect Kamala Harris to transform from a worm, a caterpillar, into a butterfly due to an election? And the fact is it really doesn’t matter what the mix of her DNA is, only what she can accomplish and is capable of…after all, there’s a very good chance if elected she’ll stumble into the presidency due to the inability to perform or death of a president who’ll be 78 years old when sworn in. With a father from Jamaica who looks more Dutch than African, and a mother from India, I suppose you can be nearly anything that’s propitious-advantageous to your ambition-even if physically impossible. Kamala Devi Harris shares her first name with an Indian flower, a Hindu deity, and a Bihari river. I find it fascinating that a woman who was elected to the Senate as an “Indian” and I don’t mean a Cherokee, but rather one more likely from Calcutta than Anadarko, has managed to transform, a metamorphosis, from an Indian to a Black.
